WHAT IS A "Bird Dog"? 

"Bird Dog" or "Lead Plane" aircraft are piloted by an Air Spray pilot who is accompanied by one or more Air Attack officers who are specially trained to direct how and where Airtanker aircraft should drop their retardant water load. in the fire. The aircraft is equipped with advanced radio systems and high-tech imaging devices such as FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared) cameras to identify areas where a retardant drop is needed to most effectively control the forest fire.
 CHARACTERISTICS   

The Turbo Commander 690 is the ideal aircraft to use in the role of Bird Dog.   The Turbo Commander aircraft gives the pilot the performance needed to operate in unison with the fastest air tanks, both in terms of cruise and in case of fire.   In addition, the exceptional visibility characteristics of the Turbo Commander 690 make it perfect for bird dog operations even in the most severe fire situations.   • Endurance: 4 hours plus reserves
  • Capable of a single IFR pilot for the fire management operation
